September starts with exciting news at BQC Redox Technologies. As research in redox biology continues to advance, the demand for reliable methods to assess oxidative stress is greater than ever.

To meet this demand, we are pleased to introduce the Total Oxidant Status (TOS) Assay Kit (KB03057), a simple, rapid and reproducible colorimetric assay designed to quantify the overall oxidant levels in a sample

Why measure Total Oxidant Status?

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and other oxidant molecules are continuously generated during normal cellular metabolism. Under physiological conditions, antioxidant defence systems keep oxidant production under control. When oxidant levels exceed the body’s antioxidant capacity, oxidative stress develops, contributing to cellular damage and the progression of numerous diseases.

Although individual oxidant species can be measured separately, these analyses are often laborious, technically demanding and expensive. Measuring Total Oxidant Status (TOS) offers a practical alternative by evaluating the overall oxidant levels of a sample rather than individual oxidant molecules.

The BQC Total Oxidant Status Assay Kit

The BQC TOS Assay Kit is based on the oxidation of ferrous ions (Fe²⁺) to ferric ions (Fe³⁺) by oxidant molecules present in the sample. The ferric ions subsequently react with xylenol orange to form a coloured complex, which is measured spectrophotometrically at 590 nm. Results are quantified using a hydrogen peroxide calibration curve and expressed as H₂O₂ equivalents (TOS).

Key features

  • Colorimetric assay (590 nm)
  • Requires only 20 µL of sample
  • Available in 100, 200 and 400 test formats
  • Suitable for serum, plasma, tissue homogenates and cell lysates
  • Fast, sensitive and reproducible protocol compatible with standard 96-well microplate readers and adaptation to 1 mL-cuvettes

Designed for routine laboratory use, the BQC TOS Assay Kit provides researchers with a straightforward and reliable solution for measuring overall oxidant levels in biomedical samples, making it an excellent choice for studies in redox biology, toxicology, inflammation, ageing and disease research.
